St. Anthony Hospitals sponsors help for seniors

DENVER ” Senior citizens can get help for prescription drug, health care, food and utility bills, but many people don’t know about all of the assistance available.

St. Anthony Hospitals now sponsors a free community service to older Coloradans called BenefitsCheckUp Colorado.

BenefitsCheckUp Colorado helps older people find benefits. After providing pertinent personal information ” which is kept strictly confidential ” callers will receive a report listing the benefits for which they may be eligible. The report will list the phone numbers and the nearest locations to apply for these benefits as well as the required paperwork.

For example, a 10-15 minute questionnaire can determine if a person qualifies for new Medicare prescription drug coverage. Another 20-30 minute questionnaire can help people find help with rent, property taxes, heating bills, meals and other needs.

The statewide program is a service of the National Council on Aging, HealthOne Alliance, Rose Community Foundation and The Colorado Trust.

The National Council on Aging wanted to transfer the service to a local agency such as St. Anthony’s, because previously the program’s access came mostly from the Internet.

“A lot of older adults don’t have Internet access or don’t deal well with the Web. And some of the forms are fairly daunting to fill out, so we follow up to make sure people are getting what they need and that the program worked,” said Jane Barnes, manager of senior programs.
