Strawberry Days festival offers another weekend full of activities
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. Festivalgoers looking for a thrill ride will need to take note of a change in venue at the 110th Strawberry Days festival.Unless they want to ride the mechanical bull in Sayre Park.Due to renovations at Glenwood Springs High School, Brown’s Carnival, which offers rides fit for children and adults, will be set up starting Thursday in the American Furniture Warehouse parking lot, in the Roaring Fork Marketplace, just off Highway 82 in south Glenwood.The free Ride Glenwood shuttle, with hours extended to 11:30 p.m., will transport passengers to and from downtown throughout the weekend. Parking is available in the Wal-Mart lots.Hours of the carnival are: 5-10:30 p.m. Thursday; 3-10:30 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Miss Strawberry Days contestants present the event’s annual fashion show at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hotel Colorado.In celebration of the festival’s 2007 theme, “Rhinestone Roundup,” a mechanical bull will test those brave enough for a rough-riding challenge at Sayre Park. On the Strawberry Days main stage, country music radio station KMTS presents a musical lineup ranging from ’50s honky tonk to Celtic dance music.Halden Wofford and the Hi-Beams, originally out of Fort Worth, Texas, open the Main Stage music with honky tonk from 7-10 p.m. Friday at Sayre Park. On Saturday, valley rock band The Strays plays from 2-4 p.m., followed by singer-songwriter Angie Stevens – voted one of Westword’s Best of Denver 2006 – from 4:30-7 p.m. Described as a mix of The Charlie Daniels Band and Johnny Cash, The Railbenders end the evening with a swinging Saturday night show from 7-10 p.m.On Sunday, celebrate Father’s Day with live music in the park early with the Earthbeat Children’s Choir from 10:45-11:30 a.m., followed by the Roaring Fork Old Time Celtic Mega Band from noon to 1 p.m. The old-time band features 40 Colorado artists, including members of local favorites The Last Minute String Band and the Heart of the Rockies. Fun-loving singer-songwriter Mack Bailey performs from 1:30-3 p.m., followed by female singer and guitarist Sharla Jackson from 3:30-5:30 p.m.The event’s Family Fest features an educational program with Hawkquest, thrills and spills by The Handsome Little Devils brotherly duo, acoustic Americana music by the Heart of the Rockies, and the magic of Chad Juros.
New this year is the inaugural Classic Car Show, with vintage automobiles leading the annual Strawberry Days Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday down Grand Avenue. The cars will be parked at the Glenwood Medical Associates parking lot, near Sayre Park, on display for public viewing throughout the day.The event also offers Colorado Pro Rodeo Association action at the Strawberry Days Rodeo at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Glenwood Rodeo Grounds. Runners can race to the finish line at the 2007 Strawberry Shortcut 10K, 5K and 1-mile Fun Run.
