Sunlight brings on the funk

Sunlight Mountain Resort is getting funky.Through Sunday, the Bring the Funk Freestyle Festival features clinics, competitions and a film screening for skiers, snowboarders and anyone who enjoys winter sports.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Sunlight hosts a free, hour-long rail clinic in the newly expanded Centre of the Rockies Terrain Park. Skiers and boarders of all abilities are invited to participate and learn the basics of riding rails.For advanced riders ready to test their mettle against other rail jammers, the Slopestyle Comp starts at 11 a.m. Saturday. Participants choose their own lines down the three-level rail park, then each rider’s top three runs are averaged to declare a winner.”There are only so many spots available at the X-Games. But at Sunlight Mountain, the competition is open to all comers,” Sunlight marketing director John Seaberry said. “Sponsored riders as well as locals take advantage of the Bring the Funk Freestyle Festival to have a great time and put on an awesome show.”

The Snow Skate Jam begins at 3 p.m. Saturday, as snow skate riders compete in a classic rail jam format. Each rider hits two pre-designated rails as many times as they like. The participant’s top five runs on each rail are averaged to find a winner.After the action on the mountain, local jam band The Hideouts will perform from 4-6 p.m. at the Sunlight Inn.



Sunday begins with a free, one-hour jump clinic at 10 a.m. as beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders can have a safe coaching session on large or small jumps. The Big Air Competition starts at 1 p.m. on the Dotsero Jumps. Riders’ top five jumps are averaged to determine the winner.A film screening of the Joslin Freeride Invitational from Thursday’s competition takes place at 3 p.m. in the day lodge. Aspen newcomer Fly Tucker (flytucker.com) will play live alternative rock from 5-7 p.m. at Sunlight Inn.Registration for all events begins at 9 a.m. in the day lodge. The educational clinics are free and competitions are $5 each. Lift tickets or passes are required.
