Sunlight will open on Friday
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado
GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Sunlight Mountain Resort plans on opening Friday with about 10 acres of terrain, but it will offer discounted tickets.
A less than thrilling amount of early season snow was a factor in the decision to lower full-day adult lift ticket prices from $48 to $25.
“It looks like it’s coming,” said marketing manager Dylan Lewis. “It’s just coming slow.”
The Tercero Lift will be running and the Midway Run, the main run under Tercero will be open. Sunlight got about an inch of snow between Saturday and Monday and there’s more snow possible through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, there is a 40 percent chance of snow today , and a 20 percent chance of snow Thursday and Friday, plus more possible snow after that. The high on Friday’s opening day is forecast at 33 degrees.
Sunlight plans to close Monday and open again the following Friday. The mountain can make more snow while its runs are closed, and closing helps to preserve snow that has already fallen, Lewis said.
Lewis remains optimistic snowfall might exceed forecasters expectations.
“Of course it’s always good to have more snow than less snow,” he said. “Last year was just a better opening for everyone around the state and everyone is pretty much hurting.”
Music will be played all day long and the first 100 people up the stairs will receive free Sunlight T-shirts. The resort is expanding its Pump Haus Terrain Park this year with as many as five new features, including a new rainbow rail.
Lewis said buses, ski school, food and beverage service in the lodge, and photos for season passes will be available during this weekend’s opening.
Sunlight is also holding a Ski and Snowboard School hiring clinic at the ski area on Dec. 1 and 2. Attendees will be taught how to improve their riding skills, learn valuable teaching methods and be qualified to teach skiing or snowboarding upon completion. Sunlight Mountain Resort will hire new instructors at the conclusion of the clinic. The cost for the two-day hiring clinic is $50, which includes coaching and lift tickets. Interested skiers and snowboarders should meet at 8:30 a.m. in the lodge at Sunlight.
