Surin gets her state title
The 2012 National Barrel Horse State Finals were held at the Rifle Fairgrounds on Sept. 8-9. At the end of the two days of racing, Silt’s Sydney Surin, 13, and her horse, Zans Baby Chick, were the 18-and-under division state champions.
The Little Britches National Champion and Colorado Junior Rodeo Association all-around champion hit a barrel last year and finished second. This year, she put together two strong runs to win her title.
The eighth-grader from Riverside Middle School has had a stellar year. She has finished in first place in 47 of the 54 18-and-under divisional races she has entered. She won the Deltarado Days Open barrel race, and finished in first place in three of the 10 weeks at the Snowmass Open rodeo.
Since winning the state finals, Surin has won the open division of the Parachute NBHA and won the American West Open race in Delta last week.
The National Barrel Horse Association wraps up the season with the District Finals being held at the Rifle Fairgrounds on Oct. 6-7.
