Survey created by high school students will determine uses for new facility

CARBONDALE – The Computers for Kids Foundation (C4K) thought it should ask some questions before its proposed technology center in Carbondale is assembled. The center, to be located in a section of the old Carbondale Middle School facility, will be designed to support community needs in areas of education, technology, training and business productivity. So, C4K thought it a good idea to ask the community what its needs are. That’s when five students from Glenwood Springs and Roaring Fork High Schools were presented the task of creating a survey that would deliver the best answers to the questions. Now all they need is the community’s help.”We are really asking the community if they would take advantage of this place, do they need a meeting place outside of the office and would they rent from us?” said C4K executive director Kirsten Petre McDaniel. The facility is designed to meet the needs of students, adults and businesses in the area who need a space to rent with technological resources on hand to use.”We really need hundreds of responses for it to be accurate,” McDaniel said. “(Students) have defined a sample plan for the area and in order for the survey to be statistically significant we do need as much feedback as possible.”The survey is part of the Partnering for Success program through C4K, a nonprofit organization that facilitates interaction between students and businesses or nonprofits in the valley to get experience in problem solving and teamwork in actual business situations. The information gathered through the survey will be assessed by the students who designed the survey and will give C4K a better idea of what services they should offer.”It will define what resources we should put in the center and how often people would prospectively use the facility,” McDaniel said. There are three surveys, which are designed for specific demographics. Each of the surveys is available online at http://www.c4kfoundation.org under the “survey” links. McDaniel estimated the survey will only take about five minutes and said that it also provides other information for the foundation.”It will help us with fundraising as well, in having such a defined plan,” McDaniel said. “(The survey) is an important one for us and it’s all being done by the kids.”The students started on the survey in July and worked with advisors such as McDaniel and Dr. Robert Blattberg, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University. McDaniel said the kids created the whole survey from scratch and went through six revisions before it was completed. The Roaring Fork School District has donated 7,000 square feet of space in the old middle school building. The C4K foundation plans on moving into the new space next spring and will close the current Glenwood Springs facility on 27th Street.Contact John Gardner: 384-9114jgardner@postindependent.comPost Independent, Glenwood Springs, Colorado CO
