Suspicious black box prompts bomb scare in Vail
VAIL, Colo. (AP) ” A mysterious black box attached to the underside of an SUV prompted the evacuation of a nearby school and gym, but police say it turned out to be a tracking device planted by a private investigator in a divorce case.
Dave Alan Stark, 52, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of criminal tampering.
Police say a witness reported seeing a man craw under an SUV at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, crawl back out and drive away.
Officers found the black box under the vehicle and summoned a bomb squad from Jefferson County, about 60 miles east. They ordered the evacuation of a nearby gymnastics center, where a dance recital was under way, and an elementary school where some children were having a sleepover.
A license plate number led police to Stark, who lives in Silt, 70 miles west. Police say Stark acknowledged planting the device, and agreed to return to Vail to remove it.
Stark did not immediately return messages left Friday at his home or office.
