Swingmeister Harry Allen, Walt Smith Combo jazz it up

Calling all Glenwood Springs jazz lovers, the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts is honored to present the legendary talents of the Harry Allen & the Walt Smith Combo, back for a return engagement. The concert is set for 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, at the arts center. Not every performer is out to set the world afire, invent a new musical language or blow away listeners with dizzying virtuosity. In concert after concert, the exquisitely understated tenor sounds of saxophonist Harry Allen have led listeners to expect the fiery exchanges that Zoot Sims and Al Cohn used to ignite. Allen’s sound and fashion is that of a swing kid. Not a product of the 90’s Swing revival, the 35-year-old horn man is a descendant of 1930s hipsters like Lester Young and other architects of the original swing thing. Allen has 18 recordings to his credit and has performed at jazz festivals and clubs worldwide with such legendary performers as Rosemary Clooney, Flip Phillips, Scott Hamilton, Harry “Sweets” Edison and Dave McKenna.Rounding out the performance with Harry Allen is the Walt Smith Combo. Hundreds of couples have fallen in love to the strains of Walt Smith’s piano music in elegant restaurants and clubs throughout the west. He is a local, legendary treasure. Smith leads a jazz group performing every Tuesday night at the Sopris Restaurant. He appears annually at the Sacramento Jazz Festival. Every fall he hosts the Jazz Party at the Silvertree Hotel in Snowmass Village at the Silvertree Hotel. His vast experience includes being a member of the very famous “World’s Greatest Jazz Band.”Smith’s combo includes guitarist Walter Hanselmann, bassist Mark Gray, and drummer Maury Allen.Tickets are $14 for members, $18 for non-members, available at the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts.
