Tack strip finally deflates motorist’s hopes of escape

A high-speed car chase spanning three counties and more than 70 miles roared through Glenwood Springs Friday before finally ending in Silt.

Around 11:30 a.m., a citizen called the Colorado State Patrol and reported a person driving recklessly in Summit County while headed west on Interstate 70.

An Eagle County sheriff’s deputy spotted the allegedly maniacal motorist at Dowd Junction, about 55 miles east of Glenwood Springs, and gave chase.

When the deputy attempted to pull over the vehicle, the driver reportedly just kept on going.

The CSP set up a roadblock near Dotsero by using a tire deflation device, but the devious driver distinguished the deflation device and swerved around it.

Colorado State Patrol troopers began pursuing the car through the treacherous curves of Glenwood Canyon and past the Hot Springs Pool. At that point, Garfield County sheriff’s deputies joined in.

As the car approached Silt, officers there were ready. They deployed a tire-deflation device at the Silt overpass and blew out three of the suspect’s tires.

The 1991 Buick came to a stop in the middle of westbound I-70.

The highway was closed for a few minutes as the suspect was picked up.

The driver, Anthony R. Sbalchiero, 25, of Crown Point, Ind., was arrested on felony eluding charges and was taken to Garfield County Jail.
