Take a musical tour with Linda Colby

Linda Colby

Linda Jenks Colby will present an evening of piano music at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church in Rifle.

The informal gathering is the second event in the ongoing St. Mary Mid-winter Arts Festival. The concert will feature selections from ancient Greece, medieval Europe and more familiar composers including Bach, Szymanowski and Debussy.”When you’ve spent most of your life studying and performing music, you run into some interesting notions that help to explain the power music has over us,” said Colby, who holds a doctorate in musical arts. “Other cultures and times are much more in tune with these concepts, but sometimes in our country we need to be reminded about what music signifies for us and what it connects us to.”

The concert takes place in the upstairs sanctuary of St. Mary Church, at Seventh and Birch streets, and will utilize the church’s grand piano and electronic harpsichord for pre-Baroque compositions.

The event is on a suggested-donation basis. Suggested donations are: $10 for adults; $8 for seniors, children 12 and younger and students. The series received a grant from the Bookcliffs Arts Council; however, all proceeds from today’s event will be used to sustain future concerts in the ongoing series. Refreshments and conversation will follow the presentation. For information call, 984-0419.
