Take a ride from Glenwood to Carbondale this weekend on a genuine rail `speeder’

Staff Report

Ride the Roaring Fork Railroad on a rail “speeder,” Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8. The rail car will take folks along the former Denver and Rio Grande tracks from Glenwood Springs to Carbondale for a unique view of the Roaring Fork Valley.

The two-hour trips leave at 9 and 10 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. from O’Leary Park west of the Glenwood Springs High School football field.

Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 16.

The rides, co-sponsored by Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, are a fundraiser for the Western Colorado Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Proceeds will be used to repair the chapter’s Denver and Rio Grande rail motorcars and restore its museum rooms at the Glenwood Springs Amtrak train station.

Speeders were used to inspect the tracks or tow a work trailer and can carry four people.
