Tancredo to speak in Eagle today

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado – Tom Tancredo is coming to Eagle County to explain his candidacy for governor to a potentially hostile Vail Valley 9.12 Project audience and their leader, Republican nominee Dan Maes’ local campaign chairman.

He is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. today at the Eagle County government building’s Eagle County Room.

Maes is the darling of the tea party advocacy groups, a number of whom are angry at Tancredo entering the race a few weeks ago in his bid to get Maes and former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis to drop their bids in favor of a Republican that Tancredo believes could beat Democrat John Hickenlooper, the governor of Denver.

The primary race between Maes and McInnis flew into turmoil after McInnis admitted committing plagiarism in articles about water he submitted to the Hasan Family Foundation as part of an agreement for services in exchange for $300,000 five years ago, after he left Congress. Maes has his own problems with campaign laws and was fined $17,000.

And Tancredo, famous while in Congress for bombastic comments and strong stand against illegal immigration, decided to enter the race after the other two candidates ignored his demands that they drop out. He is running as the nominee of the American Constitution Party. The Republican Party leadership in Colorado has acknowledged that he is likely to split the conservative vote enough that Hickenlooper will be a shoo-in for governor. And statewide polls appear to back up this observation.

Tancredo, a favorite of tea party advocates until his entry into the race, now is criticized for obstructing the chances of tea party darling Dan Maes. He’ll be speaking at the invitation of the Vail Valley 9.12 Project, a group that shares many conservative views with tea party advocates.
