Teacher using grant to explore

Ryan Graff

Melissa Matherly is putting her share of a Roaring Fork Public Education Foundation grant to good use. She’s using it to develop Pinnacles of Passion, a program for Basalt Middle School’s gifted and talented students. Matherly’s 55 or 60 students will do explorations with people around the community, such as parents, teachers or business owners. Each exploration is an interview with someone the student doesn’t know well. The hope is the students find something that interests them, and something they are passionate about, by talking to other people. Then the kids will pick a topic, do research, and set up a seminar in which they teach other students about what they are researching. So far, Matherly has kids interested in researching slavery and the holocaust. She also has a student that wants to write a book and one that wants start an interior decorating show. The grant money Matherly received was a piece of more than $4,500 the Roaring Fork Public Education Foundation donated to Basalt Middle school in January. Other projects are:”E-Mod Solar Electricity” by Jane Douglass (sixth grade)”CSI: Forensic Science” by Craig Macek (eighth grade)”Debating the Issues: by Valerie Black (library)”Broken Pottery Mosaic” by Jacquetta Green (art)
