BATTLEMENT MESA – A 14-year-old boy shot and killed a 9-year-old boy Wednesday afternoon, Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario said. The 14-year-old is being charged with manslaughter, among other things (see box). “Based on what the witness says and evidence at the scene, it was more than accidental,” said Vallario. “It wasn’t just picking up the gun and it goes off.”The shooting happened at about 2:30 p.m. on East Carson Circle in the western Garfield County community. There was at least one other juvenile present. The weapon was a .22 semiautomatic pistol, Vallario said. He did not know who it belonged to as of press time Wednesday. The 9-year-old was transported to Grand River Medical Center in Rifle. Vallario didn’t know when the boy was pronounced dead. The two boys were not likely related, Vallario said. “They’ve been described as kids who hang out together, and they don’t have the same last name,” Vallario said. The victim’s name was being withheld pending notification of family. The details of the case are still under investigation as officers had not yet been able to question the 14-year-old as of press time Wednesday night.Prosecutors are looking at the case and a decision is pending on whether to charge the teen as an adult.Contact Amanda Holt Miller: 625-3245, ext.. 103ahmiller@postindependent.com
