The Locals’ Choice Party
The Post Independent held its annual Locals’ Choice awards last week on the lawn next to the paper’s building at 2014 Grand Ave.
Martha Cochran, who was publisher at the Glenwood Independent at the time, created the awards in 1998 as a fun way to acknowledge local businesses.
The contest has grown over the years to 119 categories and 357 winners. Event organizer Ronda Ellis took the reigns of the party planning this year, in which more than 150 people attended for a first peek at the winners before the newspaper hit the stands on Friday.
The event is kept under wraps for two months until the votes are tallied and the special section is created.
Ellis said the popular event is a huge undertaking and requires a concerted effort from the newsroom, advertising and the business office that count and sort approximately 700 ballots. “It gives our local readers an opportunity to voice their opinion on who they feel is top notch,” said PI publisher Andrea Porter.
