The United Way of Garfield County awards annual grants

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – In a recently held reception, the United Way of Garfield County presented grant checks totaling $120,000 to 16 local agencies. United Way also presented Community Impact Awards to United Way’s top local donors. This event marks United Way’s 28th year connecting ordinary people to those most in need in Garfield County communities.United Way executive director Micaela Folsom and board chair Donna Gray thanked everyone who supported United Way of Garfield County during its 2010 fall campaign and explained the rigorous selection process. “We assure our donors and fellow citizens here in Garfield County that the volunteer professionals who comprise our grant allocation committee diligently vetted each grant application before awarding monies to charitable groups in our local communities,” Gray said.Folsom and Gray both spoke during the evening reception, held at Community Bank in Glenwood Springs, a United Way partner business. They noted that the organization’s independent review provides added verification to donors that the most deserving local charities are receiving vital United Way funds to continue their work for individuals and families in need in our county.This year’s recipients include Advocate Safehouse, Alpine Legal Services, Catholic Charities, Colorado West Counseling Services, Early Learning Fund, Family Visitor Program, Feed My Sheep, Junior Achievement, LIFT-UP, Literacy Outreach, Mountain Valley Development, Planned Parenthood, Roaring Fork Family Resources, The Salvation Army, Sopris Therapy Services and YouthZone. The Community Impact Awards went to ExxonMobil, Williams, LaFarge, Sunlight Mountain Resort, Xcel Energy, Marathon Oil, Alpine Bank, Crystal Valley Plumbing & Heating, Garfield County, Garfield County Public Library District, Qwest Foundation, Shell Oil, UPS and Valley View Hospital.
