Theater company to light up May nights with ‘Firebugs’

Staff Report

Thunder River Theatre Company is wrapping up its ninth season by bringing the Roaring Fork Valley one last production that will feature “professional theater at its finest.” After “Greek Shards ” Medea” last October, and “Park Your Car in Harvard Yard” over the winter, “The Firebugs” arrives just in time for spring and summer.

“The Firebugs” is not among the bugs to be worried about this summer. This hilarious satire about complacency, by Max Frisch, is not only funny, but quite timely. TRTC is creating a highly theatrical production for your summer enjoyment. In a funny, clever way the playwright demonstrates that those who proclaim their dedication to decency and charity the loudest are often the most unfamiliar with the concepts ” to the point that they can pose significant danger to others.

Frisch satirizes moral issues without trying to place himself on a higher moral level than others. That makes it easy to follow and accept his contemplations on almost every imaginable subject. Whether the play is regarded as a hilarious, almost slap-stick farce or a satirical attack against complacency depends on the point of view the audience brings to it. Whatever the case, audiences can’t help but enjoy this timely play.

“The Firebugs” runs May 21-23, and 27-29 at Colorado Mountain College’s Spring Valley Campus in the New Space Theatre. Information and tickets: 309-5398 or http://www.thunderrivertheatre.com.
