‘There’s No Place Like Home’

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – Thanks to electronic polling in the Glenwood Springs Post Independent and the social media, nearly 500 people voted in 2011 Strawberry Days theme contest. With 232 votes, “There’s No Place Like Home” was selected.
The theme was suggested by longtime resident and a past Strawberry Days Arts Fair coordinator, Joyce Webb of Silt.
Some might interpret the theme as homage to “The Wizard of Oz.”
But Webb said the phrase came to mind “because I often hear from friends when they come back from awesome vacations that they can’t complain about their vacation ending, because they get to come back to this valley. I also say that myself.
“With this quote, I’m hoping float designers will show off their pride for their home town and all the great things Glenwood Springs has to offer,” Webb said, “and why those of us lucky enough to live here can truly say ‘There’s No Place Like Home.'”
For her winning entry, Webb will receive a Strawberry Days gift basket, and be invited to ride in the 2011 parade. Strawberry Days is June 17-19, with a parade on June 18.
“I’ll really be looking forward to the parade, more than usual, this year,” Webb said.
Second place winner in the contest was “Life is Just a Bowl of Berries” with 143 votes. It was based on a Facebook suggestion by Christie Cline. “Life’s a Beach … on the Roaring Fork River,” based on a variation of themes suggested by Pat Hansen on Facebook, received 112 votes.

Over 75,000 hikers visited Hanging Lake during this year’s peak season. Via signage, the city hopes to point more of those hikers also in the direction of downtown Glenwood Springs.
