Thousands of GarCo residents have money waiting

Ryan GraffPost Independent Staff

Danny Glover, Fred Lundin, Gail Rice and even some people at the Rifle Citizen Telegram have a pleasant surprise waiting for them at the Colorado Treasurer’s Office – money. Those people, and about 4,000 other Garfield County residents and businesses, have forgotten, misplaced or lost something valuable, and the treasurer has held on to it for them. The state treasurer ended up with those people’s assets – which could be anything from a stock certificate to a forgotten paycheck – because, by law, the bank, business or state agency that issued the check or asset MUST file a report and forward those assets to the state treasurer.Recently, the state forwarded a list of Garfield County residents to county treasurer Georgia Chamberlin, who is trying to reunite people with their money. The list consists of people whom the state owes money.Chamberlin has the list at her office, and people who think they might be owed money are welcome to stop by and have a look, she said. Folks can also check the list online at http://www.greatcopayback.com.
