Ticket sales slow, but not miserable

Glenwood Springs High School’s biggest play in years opens tonight, but you won’t have trouble finding a seat. Overall ticket sales for “Les Miserables” are fantastic, but sales for both tonight and next Thursday have been slow, said director Gayla Rowe.Part of the problem is that the tickets are available only at two locations – GSHS and Mountain Peddler, 821 Grand Ave. – compared to four locations last year, Rowe said. Another problem may be that the play’s publisher restricted the school to print advertising only. The publisher allows radio public service announcements, but no radio ads, said producer Rosario Young.Tickets for a play like “Les Miserables” should be hot sellers, especially with this year’s cast, Young said. “The talent (Rowe) has this year may never come around again for decades,” she said. Among the performers are tenor Daniel Bailey and soprano Jackie Collier, both second-year Colorado All-State Choir performers and GSHS seniors. They qualified for the All-State Choir in October at Mesa State College, then auditioned again in February at Colorado State University. They performed to a sold-out crowd at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins that same month. The production “is just amazing,” Young said. “I’m blown away by it.”
