Tired of the season? Take the chill off with some summer foods
I’ve just about had it with winter. I’m sick of the short days and the messy roads. I have trudged to work through piles of snow one too many times, arriving wet and freezing. The temperamental heater in the newsroom doesn’t help, either.I’m tired of doing my hair all nice, only to have it ruined by a hat or falling snow. And I’m bored with my winter wardrobe. Dressing like an Eskimo and forgoing my cute shoes for heavy boots has lost all its appeal. My toes long to make an appearance in a sexy pair of sandals; the pretty skirt I bought on sale languishes in my closet.Don’t even get me started on the ice. My parking lot has become a veritable skating rink, with about a foot of solid ice coating the dirt. Plus, I got a new car in August, but neglected to put snow tires on. Needless to say, I’ve gotten stuck a few times going in or out of the driveway, and had to have my friendly neighbors push my car out. I should shell out the money to get snow tires soon. Of course, I wouldn’t have this problem if it was summer…Yes, I’ve got the winter blahs. While the skiers and snowboarders rejoice over freshly fallen snow, I’m turning up the heater and grumbling. I look out the window at the gray sky and bare trees and long for the summer sun. That freakin’ groundhog better not see his shadow on Feb. 2. I can’t take another six weeks of winter.Short of hopping on a plane and flying to Hawaii (not exactly in my budget), all I can do is find little reminders of summer to cure my blahs. Maybe I’ll get some fresh flowers to add some color and life to my day, or flip through photos from beach vacations. I might even try on my bathing suit, to see if it still looks good … then again, maybe not.And I’ll cook up some summer foods, using fresh fruit and vegetables. I can grill up a fresh hamburger on my George Foreman. I’ll wash it all down with a frozen margarita and listen to Jimmy Buffet CDs. Stir in the poppy seeds. Pour over the spinach and strawberries, and toss to coat.-epicurean.comFrozen margarita2 teaspoons coarse salt1 lime wedge3 ounces white tequila1 ounce triple sec2 ounces lime juice1 cup crushed icePlace salt in a saucer. Rub rim of a cocktail glass with lime wedge and dip glass into salt to coat rim thoroughly, reserve lime. Pour tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and crushed ice into a blender.
