To the friends of Rudy Steele |

To the friends of Rudy Steele

One night when I was sleeping

and I began to dream,

I saw our friend Rudy

in his boat upon a stream.

He pulled his boat beside me

and offered me a ride.

I told him how it hurt us

when we heard that he had died.

He told me not to worry

and said we should not grieve.

His illness just was much too strong,

it was time for him to leave.

He said he’d had a rich full life

for a man from Glenwood Springs.

He traveled all around the world

and seen so many things.

But mostly he was grateful

for the many friends he’d found.

Even when he felt his worst

a friend would come around.

His life was full of special friends

more than a man deserved.

He wanted us to know

that each memory was preserved.

By now the sun was setting

as he rowed us toward the bank.

He said he had just one regret,

there were too many friends to thank.

So on behalf of my friend Rudy

there is this final thought.

Thanks to all for everything,

all the fish we caught.

Thanks for the hunting time

or riding round in trucks,

or sitting by the river

waiting for the ducks.

And thanks for help with real estate

and working for the mine.

Because of all the friends he’d made

his life had turned out fine.

As he pulled the anchor in the boat

and floated `round the bend,

he said he knew down in his soul

he’d be with all his friends again!
