Tony Hershey drops out of District 61 race

Tony Hershey, a former Aspen city councilman, has decided not to seek the Republican nomination for the District 61 state House of Representatives seat.

“Sometimes you have to give up personal goals for the good of the party,” said Hershey.

Hershey talked with Becky Rippy of New Castle, who is also seeking the District 61 seat, and decided that it is important for Republicans in the district to support a single candidate, he said.

Hershey said Democrat Kathleen Curry of Gunnison is going to run a strong campaign, and it is important that Republicans focus on beating Curry instead of campaigning against each other.

“Becky has certain advantages that I don’t have,” Hershey said.

One advantage for Rippy is that she is from Garfield County, which has a larger population than Hershey’s Pitkin County. She is also well known in Garfield County, and has a well-known name, said Hershey.

Rippy’s cousin-in-law, Gregg Rippy, currently holds the District 61 seat. She is married to New Castle town administrator Steve Rippy.

Hershey said he’ll do anything he can to help Rippy win the seat.

“Becky’s going to do a great job, and she’s going to win,” he said.
