A a semi truck headed westbound on Interstate 70 carrying 4,900 gallons of flammable materials rolled while attempting to use the runaway truck ramp on the west side of Vail Pass Sunday at 12:50 p.m.

The truck was carrying multiple containers of the liquid, several of which cracked and began leaking material. Colorado State Patrol spokeswoman Trooper Heather Cobler said some containers remained on the runaway truck ramp while others had rolled toward the highway.

As of 5:30 p.m., Cobler was unsure of the exact name of the material, but said it’s a methanol-based product. Hazardous material crews were on scene cleaning and containing the spill.

One observer traveling eastbound said the accident looked like a plane was crashing into the hillside. According to Colorado State Patrol, the driver sustained minor injuries.

Eagle River Water and Sanitation District spokeswoman Diane Johnson said water officials were notified of the accident quickly and immediately shut off wells that collect water for the town’s drinking system.

“Water is totally safe and was never in question,” she said.

Westbound travelers on I-70 had to use alternate routes U.S. Highway 9 at Silverthorne or 91 at Copper Mountain for several hours Sunday afternoon and evening to get around the spill site.
