Truck rolls at EnCana gas well site

RIFLE – An EnCana trucking contractor rolled a natural gas well services truck, spilling 200 barrels of condensate into a ravine Wednesday night. The accident involving an Eclipse Trucking vehicle occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on an EnCana natural gas well site south of the Rifle airport, EnCana spokesman Doug Hock said. The driver had loaded condensate from tanks at the well site into the barrels on the truck and was hauling them away from the site. When the driver pulled onto the icy access road, the truck slid and rolled into a drainage because he failed to install chains on the truck’s tires, Hock said. The driver was not injured, he said. The 200 barrels of spilled condensate flowed 400 yards downhill and froze. The spill may have crossed onto Garfield County Airport property, Hock said. Condensate is a hydrocarbon-based “light crude” product. “You could run your lawnmower on it,” Hock said. The spill had been contained and Eclipse Trucking was cleaning it up at 9 a.m. Thursday morning. Eclipse could not be reached for comment. The accident follows a fire at an EnCana natural gas well near Parachute on Tuesday night. The fire was caused when a grain of sand escaping an open valve on a separator unit created a spark and ignited escaping gas. Contact Bobby Magill: 945-8515, ext. 520bmagill@postindependent.com
