CARBONDALE, Colorado – A semi truck hauling a load of cattle crashed on a curve on Highway 133 near the BRB Campground Tuesday morning, killing some cattle and closing the highway for more than two hours.

Around 11 a.m., the southbound truck failed to make a right curve in the road, crossed into the northbound lane and off the left side of the road. The truck hit a guardrail and rolled onto its left side, blocking both lanes of traffic, according to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Ryan Parker.

As the truck and trailer flipped over, the roof of the trailer opened up and the cattle inside were spilled out. At least seven cattle were killed in the accident, but most of the animals escaped injury. They were rounded up by local ranchers and others who arrived on horseback.

The driver, Roger A. Rose, 49, of Carbondale, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The highway was closed from the time of the accident until 2:30 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation. Driver inexperience and lane violations are suspected. Excessive speed or alcohol are not suspected, Parker reported.

The Colorado State Patrol, Pitkin and Gunnison county sheriff’s deputies, Marble and Carbondale fire departments, Colorado Department of Transportation and Blaine Ward Towing responded to the scene.
