Two hotels are going up at Glenwood Meadows, to open in 2010

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – The Glenwood Meadows mall is watching over the birth of its two newest neighbors, a Marriott Resident Inn and a Courtyard Hotel by Marriott.
Once completed the hotels will stand just to the east of the shopping mall, between the mall and the Community Center above Wulfsohn Road.
The two hotels, which both will have access off Wulfsohn Road, are expected to be finished by early 2010, possibly by February, according to development officials. They are being built on Lot 10 of the 345-acre Glenwood Meadows Subdivision, and the city permits for development were issued late in 2008.
The Residence Inn, for which the footers were being poured this week, will offer 124 guest rooms in a building of 88,000 square feet, while the Courtyard Hotel will feature 101 rooms in a 56,000-square-foot building, for a total of 225 rooms and 144,000 square feet. According to construction personnel at the site, foundation work is to begin on the Courtyard Hotel next week.
According to documents on file with the city of Glenwood Springs, the developers will build 198 parking spaces for both hotels, which is fewer than the normal requirement of one space per guest room. The variance was granted by the city during the approval process to minimize the overall size and impact of the project and to make it “walkable,” according to a memo by city planner A’Lissa Gerum.
The city’s goal in approving the mall and the two hotels, according to the Annexation and Development Agreement, was to “create a full service hospitality site within the Glenwood Meadows that accommodates a hotel with conference space or meeting rooms, a multi-screen movie theater or other entertainment venue, such as a performing arts facility or outdoor amphitheater, visitor center and/or a limited assortment of supporting retail uses such as restaurants or small stores, outdoor recreational opportunities, and the potential integration of a future park and ride and transit stop.”
Among other things, the hotel site will be a stop on the city bus system, and city officials hope it will be part of a “campus” of amenities that the public can take advantage of.
A call to the Stonebridge Co., developers of the two hotels, was not returned on Monday.
