Two injured in Highway 82 crash near Woody Creek

Aspen Times staff report

Two drivers were injured Monday morning when their vehicles collided at the intersection of Highway 82 and Smith Hill Way, outside of Woody Creek.

The driver of a GMC Acadia pulled out onto the highway from Smith Hill Way, where her vehicle was struck by a Toyota Landcruiser heading downvalley on the highway, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The patrol was summoned to the scene shortly after 9 a.m.

The names of the drivers were not available from the patrol early Monday afternoon. Both were women; they were both transported to Aspen Valley Hospital, according to a patrol trooper.

The driver of the Landcruiser was treated and released; the driver of the Acadia remained at the hospital at midday, the trooper said. The Acadia was struck in the area of the front, passenger side wheel, he said.

The driver who pulled out from Smith Hill Way was cited for failure to yield, according to the patrol.

The Colorado Department of Transportation recently completed safety improvements to the Highway 82 intersection with Smith Hill Way, though those upgrades were focused on a longer acceleration lane for entering the upvalley lanes of the highway. Drivers exiting at Smith Hill Way can either turn west (downvalley) or cross the downvalley lanes and go through an opening in a median to turn upvalley, toward Aspen.
