Two of five lawyers leaving Garfield County Attorney’s Office

Two fifths of the legal firepower of the Garfield County Attorney’s Office are leaving the office soon, officials confirmed this week.

According to County Attorney Don DeFord, attorneys Debbie Quinn and Patti Fredrick have submitted their resignations and will soon leave the office.

“They’ve decided they’re going to do other things,” DeFord said with a chuckle when contacted by the Post Independent.

Quinn, who is the senior assistant county attorney, gave her notice months ago, DeFord said, and a search already has begun for replacements for the two women.

The attorney’s office currently is made up of seven people, including five attorneys and two legal secretaries (plus a position “budgeted in contingency”), with a total budget of $1.4 million for 2010, according to budget documents provided by the county.

Of that total, more than $773,700 is to be spent this year in salaries and wages, according to the county’s adopted budget, with another $192,000 in benefits.

That is an increase from prior years, according to the same budget documents. The department’s budget in 2009 was a little more than $1 million, and in 2008 it was a little less than $1 million.

For those same years, salaries were projected to come in at $644,500 in 2009, and were listed at $617,238 in 2008, according to the budget.

In the budget workbook for 2010, salaries for the full-time attorneys ranged from about $90,000 to $103,000.
