U.S. should not take unilateral action against Iraq

Dear Editor,

We are at a point in American history in which our future safety and prosperity depend on our ability to act responsibly. Although Saddam Hussein is likely amassing weapons of mass destruction, I and millions of other people feel that we have not been shown proof of Saddam’s inevitable use of these weapons on our country or our citizens.

We have a responsibility to our servicemen and servicewomen not to subject them to peril when the threat of an unprovoked attack on America or on any of our allies has not been proven to us to be imminent.

We have a responsibility to the civilians of the United States, our allies who might fight alongside us in the event of war, the people of Iraq and their allies to avoid at all costs the casualties created by war.

We have a responsibility to stand united with the international community in finding solutions for peace, both for the sake of international prosperity and so that we may seek the cooperation of other nations in the future.

We have a responsibility not to take action unilaterally against Iraq. To do so is an affront to our allies, the same people who have showed their support for the United States since Sept. 11, 2001, and who have stood beside us in our campaign against terrorism.

If you feel that we as a country share this sense of responsibility, please urge your elected federal officials to consider all possibilities for avoiding war. Let them know that for them to do otherwise is to violate the trust given to them to act as your elected representatives.

Sincerely,

Seth Brickner
