GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. – U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., will be in Glenwood Springs this afternoon to visit the Fiberforge thermoplastics manufacturing plant on Devereux Road.

The stop is one of two today for the senator from Eldorado Springs. He is currently touring the state meeting with local business leaders and highlighting his efforts aimed at creating jobs and protecting the state’s quality of life, according to a media alert sent out Thursday.

This morning, Udall will hold a press conference with Summit County officials near the Iron Springs Mill on Boreas Pass Road to discuss cleanup efforts at that and other abandoned mine sites.

Udall is then scheduled for a 3 p.m. tour of the Fiberforge facility in Glenwood Springs.

“I look forward to learning more about the work Fiberforge does and the multiplier effect it has in creating high-tech jobs in Glenwood Springs and western Colorado,” Udall said in a prepared statement.

He noted that Fiberforge founders Jon Fox-Rubin and David Cramer came out of a struggling auto industry during the economic downturn, and brought high-tech manufacturing jobs to western Colorado.

Fiberforge designs and manufactures lightweight thermoplastic and composite parts for everything from airplanes, automobiles and military aircraft to outdoor gear and helmets for the troops.

“These products are less expensive and more efficient,” Udall said. “They have carved a unique niche in taking advantage of the homegrown labor force here and spurring rural business opportunities.”

Many of those jobs are high-tech, including aerospace engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, materials scientists, equipment designers and automotive engineers, according to the Fiberforge website.

Among the company’s clients are Toyota, Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Boeing, Sikorsky and iRobot.
