United Way suffers from budget cuts

National United Way is scampering to find funding to compensate for government budget cuts.Federal and state governments, which raise the most money for human service organizations, have been forced to reduce spending. With the 2003-2004 budget, United Way of Garfield County will give up to $70,000 in grant money to qualified organizations. So far, United Way of Garfield County has distributed $28,000 of grant money. Local human service organizations, such as Advocate Safehouse Project, Alpine Legal Service and Youth Zone, can apply for the Primary Grant. Historically, this has been the only grant for United Way of Garfield County. To better serve organizations that aren’t human-service related, United Way developed the Associate Member application. Benefactors will be included in United Way of Garfield County’s brochure and publicity but will not receive any funding. “By doing this, we think the door for other grants may open up,” said Leslie Robinson, director of United Way of Garfield County. Applications are due July 16, and grant recipients will be notified by January 2005.United Way of Garfield County gets grant money through local donations and will start the fund-raising campaign for 2005 in September. They hope to raise $250,000.To apply or make a donation, call, 625-8189 or visit http://www.unitedwayofgarfieldcounty.org.To apply or make a donation, call, 625-8189 or visit http://www.unitedwayofgarfieldcounty.org.
