Updated update: Wednesday I-70 detour canceled

Crews work Wednesday on a pier for the new pedestrian bridge that is to open next spring to cross the Colorado River and Interstate 70. Work to place steel girders for the bridge will force nighttime closures of I-70 next week.

The Colorado Department of Transportation on Tuesday revised the schedule for Interstate 70 detours through Glenwood Springs.

I-70 will be closed tonight from the eastern edge of Glenwood starting at 8 p.m. and lasting until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Traffic will be routed along Sixth Street from the Yampah Spa to Exit 116 during the closure.

The interstate was scheduled for the same detour the same hours on Wednesday night into Thursday morning, but that has been canceled.

The Grand Avenue bridge, though, will be closed from 8 a.m. to 6 a.m. both nights.  The final closure for this work ends Thursday morning.

Motorists hoping to head upvalley on Highway 82 or drivers traveling to Interstate 70 from south of the river will need to use Exit 114 in West Glenwood. Local traffic will be detoured at Eighth Street to Colorado Avenue and Midland Avenue.

The work this week is not expected to impact pedestrian travel across the bridge.
