Vail local dies after case of flu

VAIL, Colorado – A longtime local died Monday night after being sick for several days with flu-like symptoms.

Ben Matthews was a popular and well-known member of Sweet Basil’s staff.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, said Kara Bettis, Eagle County coroner.

Friends said he was suffering from the flu and went to the doctor Saturday because he was having trouble breathing. They said they were discussing Monday whether he should go to the hospital.

He was found Monday night, friends said.

“The world lost an amazing man today,” said Lisa Marie Palmieri on Matthews’ Facebook page.

Matthews was the oldest of five children. Two of his brothers, Nic and Nate, also worked with the Sweet Basil company.

“Words cannot express the feelings I have right now. I am still in shock … I love you to the moon and back,” his sister Desiree Matthews posted on Ben’s Facebook page.

Benjamin John Matthews, 33, was born Nov. 4, 1979, in Lincoln, Neb. He graduated Lincoln East High School and graduated Missouri State University in 2002.

He moved to the Vail Valley a few years later.
