Valerie Jean Nelson

Valerie Jean Nelson, 42, of New Castle, passed away March 2, 2009, at her sister’s home in Parachute.

She was born May 20, 1966, in Tacoma, Wash., to Raymond Edwin and Lorene Slate Nelson. She was raised by Barbara Rae Richards from the age of 5.

She was an area resident for 23 years, and worked at Mountain Valley Developmental Center. She participated in Special Olympics.

Her life was filled with many hurdles and challenges, and what she has taught the people she knew was an inspiration to all. With a smile on her face, sparkle in her eye and wind in her hair, she brought life to everyone.

Survivors include sisters Barbara R. Richards (aka Mom), and Deborah VanVlack (aka Momma); brother James E. Nelson; nieces (aka sisters) Tamra L. Blackard, Laura M. Dickard and Jody McKeen; nephews Elijah VanVlack, Ed VanVlack and James Nelson; great-nieces and -nephews Mikayla, Ryan and Cassidy Blackard, and Ashley, Alisha and Alexis VanVlack; and numerous other great-nieces and -nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 9, at Skyline Cemetery in Silt. Barbara Ivy will officiate.
