Valley bark beetle discussions take place this week in Carbondale and Aspen

ROARING FORK VALLEY, Colorado ” The beetles are coming.

The Roaring Fork Valley has been relatively unaffected so far by pine beetles that have gnawed through pine forests in Grand and Summit counties. But the beetles have arrived in the area, and patches of dying trees can be seen including along the flanks of Mount Sopris, near Aspen and in the Fryingpan River headwaters, Wilderness Workshop said in a news release.

A free panel discussion about pine beetles is scheduled Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Dos Gringos Burritos in Carbondale. Another is scheduled Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies in Aspen.

The discussions are part of a Naturalist Nights speaker series called “Beetlemania: What’s the Big Deal?” They will bring together three experts from the U.S. Forest Service, Colorado State Forest Service and Colorado State University. Experts will speak about bark beetle ecology and the beetles’ role in forest succession, the current bark beetle outbreak and its effects, and ways for communities to mitigate the effects of the bark beetle outbreak.
