Valley View team, literacy efforts Spellebration winners
A team of spellers sponsored by Valley View Hospital proved letter perfect Friday in the 10th annual Spellebration, an adult spelling bee that raised $17,000 for Literacy Outreach and the Colorado Mountain College Learning Labs.
The Valley View Hospital team of Jeanette Refior, Darrell Vigil and Michelle Kistner won the event by correctly spelling “vinaceous,” which means similar to, belonging to or having the color of grapes or wine.
To win, the team also had to first correctly spell the skiing-related word “schussboomer.” It was missed by the runner-up team, Kiwanis and Friends, with which Valley View engaged in a protracted duel before finally prevailing. Glenwood Insurance Agency took third-place honors.
Twenty-five teams participated in the event, which helps fund LO and Learning Labs’ adult literacy programs.

Hip Roof Camp, located at the top of the Mitchell Creek trail in West Glenwood, served as a sawmill. The window on the roof was used when the snow got too high to exit the main door.
