CARBONDALE – The peaceful vibe from Mountain Fair stopped just hours after the festival ended when someone vandalized a piece of public art and other objects in the downtown area overnight Sunday. According to Frank Norwood, owner of Carbondale’s Main Street Gallery and a public art supporter, the sculpture was rocked back and forth before it was finally knocked over completely. “As near as we can determine, it happened in the middle of the night on Sunday,” he said. The $3,800 sculpture, which was located at the corner of Third and Main streets next to Miser’s Mercantile, consisted of a piece of marble with a jagged stainless steel sphere in the middle. Carbondale resident Sherrill Stone created the piece of art. “It looks like they rocked it off its base,” Norwood said. The steel ball, which was cemented into the marble base, was stolen during the vandalous act and remained missing Monday. The marble base was knocked over and had some damage, but it remained at the corner. Norwood said the vandals also knocked over a planter, smashed a mailbox and ripped down a flag in the area. Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call Carbondale police at 963-2675.Contact Greg Massé: 945-8515, ext.
