The Basalt Police Department is asking for help from the public to find an unknown male who robbed the Vectra Bank branch in Orchard Plaza near Movieland on Friday morning.

A man dressed in a black ski jacket, light colored pants, multi-colored ski gloves, a dark face mask and either goggles or sunglasses walked into the bank at 10:40 a.m. and handed the teller a note saying something along the lines of, “Give me all the money in the drawer,” according to Basalt Sgt. Stu Curry.

The man didn’t say anything and he didn’t show a weapon or make any reference to a weapon, Curry said. He was in an out of the bank in less than one minute. He took the note with him. Curry wouldn’t disclose how much money the robber obtained.

The teller wasn’t able to tell the man’s ethnicity or age. Two tellers and two other employees were in the bank at the time. No one was harmed.

“They’re doing really well, probably because nobody got a gun in their face,” Curry said.

Pictures of the robber taken by the bank surveillance system show only a small part of his forehead was exposed. He was otherwise concealed.

The bank is located at 218 E. Valley Rd., next to the UPS Store. The robber left the bank in an unknown direction. Basalt police along with deputies from the Pitkin and Eagle County Sheriff’s Offices started searching the subdivisions and shopping areas near El Jebel within minutes of the report, but to no avail. “We searched everywhere,” Curry said.

One witness called after the robbery to report he saw a suspicious male walking toward the bank dressed in the ski clothing and mask, according to authorities. The witness didn’t see the man emerge from any vehicle.

Basalt police are asking anyone with information about the robbery or robber to call the department at 970-927-4316. Calls can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 970-945-0101.

The FBI is assisting Basalt Police Department with the investigation.

Bank robberies are a rare occurrence in El Jebel. Curry said a man making a deposit to an ATM machine was robbed about a decade ago. Clark’s Market in Basalt has been robbed twice over the last decade or so and 7-Eleven was robbed in recent years.
