Vet a goat to some, a hero to others

Dear Editor,

This letter is in response to the letter in Thursday’s Post Independent newspaper written by Linda Fields. My family was in Monte Vista this past weekend performing an exhibition with our six-horse hitch of Percherons when a piece of equipment on the harness and wagon failed, causing the horses to bolt and run into the arena wall. Two of the horses were run over and dragged by the other four horses, and my father-in-law is in the ICU at St. Anthony’s hospital in Denver with several serious head and chest injuries.

My family has used Dr. Hamilton, “our regular vet,” as a veterinarian for several years, and upon hearing of our accident, Dr. Hamilton immediately got on the phone with us. He left at 5 a.m. the next morning to drive six hours down to Monte Vista to help us stabilize and transport our injured horses home! Sounds like a very uncaring vet to me!

He called Dr. Boland, and she immediately told him that she would cover his small animal practice on Monday so that he could travel down and help us. Again, another very uncaring vet in the valley!

Dr. Hamilton rode home with our horses, stopping frequently to take their vitals and make sure they arrived home safely at 6 p.m. Monday evening.

Dr. Hamilton was a “hero” to us this weekend, and we will be forever grateful to him for the help and support he gave us in the wake of a very devastating accident!
