Victims in fatal truck accident ID’d

The Colorado State Patrol has released the names of the driver and passenger killed when a dump truck drove across the railroad tracks and into the path of an oncoming locomotive east of Rifle on Thursday.The driver was Fabian E. Minor, 49, of New Orleans, La. The passenger was Caleb R. Ras, 22, of Lame Deer, Mont.Both men died instantly when an eastbound Union Pacific locomotive broadsided the truck. Minor was turning the truck from Highway 6&24 onto a Casey Concrete gravel pit access road at 8:30 a.m. when the accident occurred.The train engineer reported that Minor slowed to make a left turn from the highway, but did not attempt to stop before coming to the railroad tracks.Neither man had been to Casey Concrete before. The State Patrol said one of the men was on a CB radio, getting directions from another trucker, before they were hit.The truck was owned by a Texas paving company.Train conductor David Mantlo, 56, of Grand Junction, received neck, hip and shoulder injuries, and was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.Engineer Floyd Unfred, 56, also of Grand Junction, was not injured.
