Vinger propels tennis Demons to fourth at regionals

Post Independent staff report
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

Coach Phyllis Zilm can’t remember the last time her Glenwood Springs girls tennis team had a better regional showing.

With a fourth-place team finish and No. 3 singles standout Brandi Vinger placing second to qualify for next weekend’s state tournament in Pueblo, Zilm and the Demons were on their game at Thursday and Friday’s Class 4A Region 8 tournament in Grand Junction.

“It surprised us a little bit, but it was just awesome,” Zilm said.

Glenwood finished behind regional champion Steamboat Springs, second-place Durango and third-place Aspen at Canyon View Park.

Vinger lost to Steamboat’s Claire Parsons (6-0, 6-0) in Friday’s championship to finish second and punch her ticket to Pueblo.

The Demons’ No. 1 singles player, Sarai Zilm, very nearly joined Vinger in Pueblo. She advanced all the way to the challenge match, in which second-place finishers square off with third-place finishers (if they haven’t already crossed paths) with the second of two state berths on the line.

Steamboat’s Christi Valicenti defeated Zilm (6-0, 6-2) to nab the final state spot. Zilm wound up taking third overall at No. 1 singles.

Whitney Bridger finished fourth at No. 2 singles for Glenwood.

The 4A state tournament runs Thursday through Saturday at Pueblo City Park.
