Virgili is excellent leader

Dear Editor,

I am writing in support of Marianne Virgili and the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association. Recent articles in the local papers may cause some readers to think disparagingly of the chamber and its activities. I would like to point out the many excellent things the chamber does under the leadership of Ms. Virgili.

One, the chamber is the No. 1 booster of Glenwood Springs. The Chamber Visitor Center is the go-to place to get questions answered about our community and directions to areas of interest.

Two, the chamber organizes and coordinates the entire Strawberry Days Festival, the biggest three-day celebration in Glenwood Springs.

Three, the chamber honors and recognizes the many excellent businesses and leaders in our community with the annual Top Brass, Volunteer of the Year, Athena, and Citizen of the Year awards.

Four, the chamber encourages business development and good business practices with its ongoing small business programs, worker’s comp program, sponsorship of the business after hours networking opportunities, and health care initiatives through the Roaring Fork Health Plan.

Five, the citizen-based Community on the Move group would never have been so successful in passing needed community initiatives without the organizational support of the chamber. It is the chamber who always coordinates Issues and Answers Night for our local elections.

If it is important to the well-being of our community, the chamber is out there in the lead … lending a helping hand, opening the doors to discussion, promoting an issue. And the person leading the chamber is Marianne.

Keep up the great work. Glenwood wouldn’t be Glenwood without the chamber and Marianne at its helm.

Dear Editor,

Gas prices are up. We are severely in debt because our government is throwing away money. Our environment is being destroyed as new laws encroaching on the Alaskan wilderness are being made. People are suffering at home because of poor planning and indifferent rulers. Our troops are being killed for weapons that were never found, and there is no end in sight for this war. Our president was told of the impending disaster in New Orleans and still went on vacation. Our new chief justice, John Roberts, has likened abortion to the euthanization of the mentally ill.

I hear the partisan debate daily, but why is it that this country is only “deceitful Republicans” and “hippy liberals”? The United States is supposed to be a nation of strong moral fiber, but why is it we put up with lies and corruption? It defies reason that we the people would put up with a government that violates our trust and virtues.

Our founding fathers had enough fortitude to defy the most powerful country of their day, and yet we the people cower to the people we put in power.

“It is the people, to whom all authority belongs.” ” Thomas Jefferson
