PEACH VALLEY, Colorado – The Coal Ridge Lady Titans displayed superior offense and defense Saturday, dominating the visiting Gunnison and Olathe ladies in home showdowns. The Titans defeated the Gunnison Cowboys, 3-0, and the Olathe Pirates, 3-2.
The first two games against Gunnison were close, with scores of 25-21 and 25-23. But the Titans dominated in the third, winning the game, 25-16, sealing the match.
Against Olathe, the Titans played as a hard-hitting, aggressive team, repeating their morning’s showing against Gunnison.
Defensively, Olathe’s attacks found waiting defenders and blockers, making kills for the visiting Pirates sparse.
Olathe got off to a quick start in the first game, winning, 25-22. But Coal Ridge then responded with a decisive, 25-17 win in the second match. The Titans dropped the third, 25-20, and completely dominated in the fourth, at one time leading 14-2 en route to a 25-9 win, which forced a fifth game.
In the fifth, Coal Ridge pulled to a 5-0 lead before the Pirates fought back to tie the score at 11, 13 and 14. In a repeat of the day’s action, superior defense set up a final kill by Christa Currier, who drilled a line shot to the far back corner and sealed the game, 16-14.
Coal Ridge, now 11-4 in the 3A Western Slope League, hosts Rifle this Thursday in the Titans’ final home match of the season. Seniors Annie McNeel, Kayla Hinkley, Kelsey Gasaway, Zoe Reece and Christa Currier will be recognized and honored.
