Volunteers busy beautifying downtown

Festive banners and spring planters decorating the downtown didn’t appear out of thin air. They materialize when the Downtown Development Authority decided to take the future of downtown business into its own hands. The organization of 353 downtown business and local volunteers put promotional activities in full swing to bring more business to downtown Glenwood. The DDA district includes businesses from 7th Street to 11th Street as well as businesses north of the Colorado River. Businesses are not required to join. Those that join do so to help promote and generate interest in the downtown shopping core, said Suzanne Stewart, vice chair of the downtown retail and restaurant committee, a branch of the DDA .Since January, the DDA’s placed new sidewalk planters on street corners, hung banners across downtown street lights and planned downtown-centered events such as the Mother’s Day giveaway.”With every event there’s more potential for people to come downtown,” said Stewart. “We’re giving people who want to come downtown reasons to.”The planters, banners and events are put together by DDA members -who are not paid – in their free time.”I think a lot people think the city does all of this,” Stewart said. “But they don’t.”The DDA is asking Glenwood residents and business owners to share ideas for downtown promotions.
