Vondette’s hearing set for Dec. 7

A District Court judge will decide Dec. 7 if there is probable cause to charge a convicted sex offender with multiple counts of second degree kidnapping and enticement of a child. Loy Vondette, 43, of Rifle, appeared before District Court Judge Dan Petre Thursday with his attorney, public defender Jim Conway. Petre set the date for the preliminary hearing that will combine two cases against Vondette.Charges stem from an incident in July in which Vondette allegedly tried to coax two young girls into his car in the Palomino Park subdivision in Rifle. He is also charged with attempting to entice two girls in Apple Tree Park in New Castle on June 20. In addition, Vondette is charged with harassment for propositioning an Eagle policeman’s wife on Aug. 4 while he was out on $25,000 bond for the Rifle incident. Vondette was arrested on Aug. 10 by Garfield County sheriff deputies and remains in jail on $100,000 bond.Vondette spent six years in prison after being convicted of two charges of sexual assault in 1993 in Garfield County. He is a registered sex offender in Garfield County.At his preliminary hearing, the prosecutor will present evidence and witnesses to prove the offenses covered by the charges against him was committed. The defense may also present witnesses as well as evidence.
