GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – Garfield County has seven different ballots for residents, depending on where they live within the county or within one of the six municipalities.Registered voters can find their precinct number on their voter registration card, which they should have received by mail, by visiting where precinct maps are available, or by calling the Garfield County Clerk’s Office at 945-2377, ext. 1770.Voters wanting an early look at their specific ballot can do so by visiting the Garfield County Clerk’s website and clicking on the Elections and Voter Registration link under the County Services tab at the top of the home page. The next page will have a list of ballots by precinct available.Garfield County Clerk Jean Alberico said that is a good way for voters not planning to vote by mail-in ballot to get an early look at the ballots before showing up at a polling place to vote on Nov. 4. Those without Internet access can either request a mail-in ballot by calling the county clerk’s office or by going online to and clicking on the 2008 election news link.Mail-in ballots are still available and can be requested until Oct. 28, and voters can have one mailed to them. Or mail-in ballots can be picked up in person by 4:30 p.m. in Rifle or 5 p.m. in Glenwood Springs no later than Oct. 31. All ballots must be returned by 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 either by mail or in person at the clerk’s office in Glenwood Springs, the Rifle Annex – both offices will be open Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mail-in ballots can also be dropped off in person at Carbondale Town Hall, New Castle Town Hall, Silt Town Hall and Parachute Town Hall, during business hours before Election Day. Mail in ballots will not be accepted at polling places before or on Election Day.When mailing ballots, voters should note that this year’s ballots require 59 cents worth of postage, not the regular 42 cent postage for a normal United States Postal Service parcel, according to Alberico. The ballots are longer this year and require an extra page, which makes for a higher cost for delivery, she said.No identification is required with mail-in ballots, except for those who are first-time voters who have registered – by mail – for the first time in Garfield County. Alberico estimated that less than 200 county residents need to include some kind of identification with their mail-in ballots. However, all people voting by mail-in ballot must remember to sign the ballot for verification before they send it in. Signatures on the ballots will be checked with signatures on file at the Garfield County Clerk’s Office for verification. Those needing to send in identification will be notified in red print on their mail-in ballot when it’s delivered to their home.Ballots without signatures will be sent back to the voter for verification. The voter then has eight days after the election to return the ballot.Ballots were mailed out Friday, Oct. 10, and voters should have them no later than Friday, Oct. 17. People who have requested a mail-in ballot but have not received one by then, should call the Garfield County Clerk’s Office for clarification.Contact John Gardner: 384-9114jgardner@postindependent.comPost Independent, Glenwood Springs, Colorado COH
