Voters decide on VVH street vacation Tuesday

Glenwood Springs voters will decide Tuesday whether to vacate sections of 19th Street and Palmer Avenue to make way for Valley View Hospital’s $32 million expansion and a newly configured street.

The special election is being held from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at Glenwood Springs City Hall, 101 8th St.

Voters will be asked two questions: one to vacate a 568-foot portion of 19th Street, and a second to vacate a 350-foot stretch of Palmer Avenue.

Hospital officials plan to replace the existing streets with hospital parking lots and expand the building, including a larger emergency room, radiology department and Family Birthplace. Instead of the two existing streets, a private street would wrap around the hospital and Valley View’s Medical Office Building.

“It will give us more of a campus, without having a road in the middle,” said Gary Brewer, Valley View’s chief executive officer.

Mike Biles, director of facilities management at Valley View, said construction on the hospital is set to begin in June 2003, which is when the streets would be closed.

The hospital’s board of directors decided to hold the special election Tuesday since they didn’t want the questions to get overlooked in the extensive general election ballot on Nov. 5.
