Wal-Mart closes on Rifle property

Staff Report

Retail giant Wal-Mart finalized its deal with Rifle Retail Ventures LLC Wednesday to buy a 17.3-acre building site in Rifle on the south side of Interstate 70.

Rifle Retail Ventures announced the sale, but did not release the purchase price. Wal-Mart officials have not commented.

Last year, the Rifle City Council approved Wal-Mart’s plans to build a 156,000-square-foot store in the 49-acre shopping center now called Rifle Commons.

“This project will also encompass a large combination of national, regional and local retailers, servicing customers throughout the mountain valley region as the dominant shopping center between Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs and Aspen,” said Rifle Retail Ventures LLC partner David Glimcher.

Rifle Commons is a joint venture with the David J. Glimcher Co. and Plaza Properties, both of Columbus, Ohio.

Glimcher said his company has developed more than 15 million square feet of shopping centers throughout the country.
