Wal-Mart is one of the biggest success stories in the history of capitalism.Sam Walton opened his first Wal-Mart in Rogers, Ark., in 1962, and by 1995 had 1,995 stores across the United States and in other countries. Here are some highlights from a time line on Wal-Mart’s website:-1967 – Wal-Mart’s 24 stores, all located in Arkansas, record sales of $12.6 million.-1968 – Wal-Mart moves outside Arkansas, and opens stores in Missouri and Oklahoma.-1975 – A total of 125 stores are in operations in nine states, with $340 million in sales.-1979 – Wal-Mart breaks the $1 billion sales mark for the first time, and expands to Alabama, its 11th state.-1985 – The company operates 882 stores, with sales of $8.4 billion.-1987 – In its 25th year of operation, Wal-Mart records $15.9 billion in sales from its 1,198 stores.-1990 – Wal-Mart becomes the nation’s No. 1 retailer.-1995 – Wal-Mart enters Vermont, its 50th state.-1997 – Total sales hit $105 billion.-1999 – Wal-Mart has 1,140,000 associates, making it the world’s biggest employer.-2001 – Wal-Mart has its biggest sales day in history: $1.25 billion on the day after Thanksgiving.
